For the last three years, Daniel Golden has transformed his shoe shine booth into the Starshine Enterprise, sitting at its helm as Captain James T. Kirk from the classic television science fiction series, Trek. really don do very well Comic Con weekend, because it summer and it sandal and tennis show weather. But I do this just to be part of the fun, said Golden, dressed in Kirk command uniform.

Convention goers may not be getting their shoes shined, but they definitely take notice of Golden spot on cosplay.

Keri Lemelle of San Diego, dressed as a Star Trek redshirt, couldn pass up the chance to get a photo with Golden. Always willing to oblige, the 64 year old San Diego native, pulled out a communicator, put on his best Kirk face and posed for a few shots with the Trekker.

On Friday, though, Golden did have at least one customer who remembered the Shatner doppelganger from last year convention.

had him shine my boots last year, and he did a great job so I decided to get them shined again, said Chris Kmec of Los Angeles.

The two chatted about their shared love for Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead as Golden worked on Kmec well worn, two toned boots.

know, I don just look like Shatner, Golden said. started out looking like Jerry Garcia, but one year my sister gifted me with Lasik eye surgery and there went the aviator glasses. Then someone said, why don you lose the beard? It time.

Then he found an ad on Craigslist that caught his eye.

said, to meet interesting people from all over the world? So I answered the ad and I was hired as a shoe shine, he said. That was five years ago.

The stress and bustle of working at the San Diego airport didn agree with Golden, so he moved to Joey Shoe Shine inside the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.

This year, Golden finally had the opportunity to meet Shatner during a meet and greet at the Chuck Jones Gallery, and even the 85 year old actor was taken aback by just how much Golden resembled him, Golden said.

said, you you, or are you me? recalled Golden. said, sure the hell hope I me! from the fun Golden has with fans during SDCC, he and fellow Star Trek cosplayer, Paul Forest, who takes on the persona of Mr. Spock, make appearances to help raise money for epilepsy organizations.

just something we like to do to give back and help, Golden said.

After a 15 minute clean and shine, Golden bid Kmec goodbye.
