Ideas for a spaceship: Flight of the Phoenix? Or should that be the spaceship Freedom? Or Destiny, Serenity or Enterprise? In response to our call for nominations, hundreds of Cosmic Log readers sent in plenty of flashy names for NASA’s proposed Crew Exploration Vehicle, the yet to be designed craft that would sail a new course beyond Earth orbit, to the moon and beyond.

As you might expect, “Star Trek” inspired names like Enterprise led the suggestion list, closely followed by “Firefly” inspired names like Serenity. Of course, Enterprise is also a time hallowed name for sailing ships, which is one reason why “Star Trek” went with that name in the first place. But “Phoenix” would have to be the leader among names that didn’t already have strong TV or naval connotations. (Update: Kevin Grazier of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who also knows his way around the sci fi world, points out that Phoenix was a “Star Trek” spaceship name as well. “That has to explain at least part of the popularity, apart from the obvious Columbia reference,” he says.)

“Freedom” was also a strong contender and after all, if President Reagan had his way, the current international space station would have been called Space Station Freedom.

At the risk of inviting some serious ballot box stuffing, we’re offering a thoroughly unscientific Live Vote that lists some of the top picks. To my mind, it’s far more interesting to read some of the rationales for unconventional suggestions. So you’ll definitely want to check out the latest feedback file for a selection of the e mail letters.

Who ultimately decides what space projects are named? That’s generally up to the project managers or the politicians. A NASA online book titled “Chariots for Apollo” describes how Abe Silverstein came up with the name Apollo in 1960 while he was director of NASA’s Office of Space Flight Programs:

“Silverstein, one of those leading the charge toward more far ranging flights than Mercury, had been looking for a suitable name for a payload for the Saturn rockets. None suggested by his associates seemed appropriate. One day, while consulting a book on mythology, Silverstein found what he wanted. He later said, ‘I thought the image of the god Apollo riding his chariot across the sun gave the best representation of the grand scale of the proposed program.'”

NASA is a long way from deciding what the Crew Exploration Vehicle will look like, let alone what it will be called. But that hasn’t stopped the Boeing Co., one of the certain bidders on the CEV project, from putting up a selection of artist’s renditions showing what components of the space transportation system might look like. (Thanks to Transterrestrial Musings and NASA Watch for providing the Boeing links.)

Judging from the selection, it looks as if NASA will have plenty of doodads to name.

E voting experiments: Should we tinker with voting technology? In a way, that’s what the Pentagon is doing with its controversial experiment on Internet voting for Americans overseas and in a newly published book, two experts on election reform vote in favor of such step by step testing.

“Point, Click and Vote” is written by Michael Alvarez, a political science professor at the California Institute of Technology; and Thad Hall, a program officer with the Century Foundation. Alvarez and Hall are among the experts monitoring the Pentagon’s Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment, and both men disagree with the view, advanced by four computer experts this week, that the SERVE project should be canceled.

New views of Blue Planets: The Spirit rover’s communications gap has shut off the spigot for Red Planet pictures temporarily, but in the meantime, newly released pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope are highlighting planets of a different color.

Today’s images of Uranus and Neptune were taken last August by Hubble’s Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and what could be the last instrument ever installed on the orbiting observatory, the Advanced Camera for Surveys.

In visible light, the two gas giants look like nearly identical twins in robin’s egg blue. But by fiddling with Hubble’s color filters, scientists can bring out details that reveal much about atmospheric composition and even weather.

Erich Karkoschka / Univ. of Arizona NASA

Methane storms, thin rings and moons are visible in this enhanced color image of Uranus.

“The enhanced color images show how an instrument with different spectral sensitivity than that of the human eye can change the view,” Erich Karkoschka, a researcher at the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory who processed the imagery, said in a university news release. “There is more to everything than what the eye can see.”

For starters, it becomes much clearer that Uranus rolls on its side in its orbit, and that it has a set of faint rings composed of dust and pebbles.

Two “lost” Scottish distilleries closed more than 30 years ago are to be brought back to life following a investment in the whisky market.

Port Ellen and Brora have lain silent since they were closed in 1983, but their whiskies have become some of the most highly prized and sought after in the world.

But now whisky company Diageo is set to invest to reopen Port Ellen Distillery on Islay and Brora Distillery on the remote eastern coast of Sutherland.

It’s World Whisky Day so try out our ultimate Scotch whisky quiz

Cask filling and traditional warehousing will be included on both sites in an attempt to replicate the original distilleries.

It is hoped the distilleries will become iconic attractions in the Scottish tourism landscape attracting whisky pilgrims from around the globe.

The Brora distillery was built in 1819, although it was known as “Clynelish” until the opening of the Clynelish Distillery in 1968, whereupon the name of the original Clynelish was changed to “Brora”.

“Port Ellen and Brora are names which have a uniquely powerful resonance with whisky lovers around the world and the opportunity to bring these lost distilleries back to life is as rare and special as the spirit for which the distilleries are famous.

New ‘ North Sea oil field discovered in Moray Firth basin

“Only a very few people will ever be able to try the original Port Ellen and Brora single malts as they become increasingly rare, so we are thrilled that we will now be able to produce new expressions of these whiskies for new generations of people to enjoy.”

Subject to planning permission and regulatory consents, detailed design, construction and commissioning work, it is expected the distilleries will be in production by 2020.

David Cutter, Diageo President of Global Supply and Procurement, said: “This is no ordinary Scotch whisky distillery investment.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to bring these iconic distilleries back to life.”

And the move has been welcomed by the Scottish Government.

Responding to the news, Economy Secretary Keith Brown said: “I welcome this significant investment by Diageo which will help to create employment in these rural and remote communities and is a sign of the strength and popularity of our iconic whisky industry.

Waqas Ali and Sidra Qasim are family friends from Okara. Today, they run a company known as Markhor, which produces handmade shoes and has a high end clientele in many parts of the world. The brand is named after an endangered animal, Markhor, which is Pakistan’s national emblem. The owners believe they are protecting a craft that is both iconic and endangered.

The idea of setting up this company came to Ali’s mind when he met Muhammad Hussain, a shoemaker in Okara. The shoemaker complained that they could hardly make both ends meet despite producing products of unmatchable quality.

Ali who was inspired by the power of the internet and social media thought that these mediums could be used to connect master artisans with those in the world who could really value their craft. So, he set up this platform and tried to minus the middlemen and reach the potential clients directly.

It took a few failed attempts to get the company orders from abroad, including from a top executive at Google. Ali was so determined and confident that he discontinued his studies and focused on this project. He would spend his college fees on establishing the brand, something that disturbed his parents who finally stopped funding him.

Ali shared the idea with Sidra and got her support. The brand, previously known as Hometown Shoes, manufactures customised leather shoes and sells them online at a premium price.

The craftsmen are also earning amounts many times more than they would earn earlier. These shoes are being sold for as high as Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per pair. “The best part is that the owner tries to deliver them at the doorstep of the buyers,” says Uzair Shahid, Project Manager at Plan 9. “Ali has been the most enterprising individual that we have come across so far,” he says.

Markhor products are valued as all products and process involved are traceable. The CEO reaches the buyer with a personal note and the latter’s name inscribed on the product.

Icy stairs and sidewalks are terrifying to navigate on foot, not to mention dangerous. And the experts agree that rock salt (sodium chloride) is about the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to make ice go away.

But with everything good comes some bad: Rock salt can damage plants and, over time, can cause concrete to heave and crack.

“Salt kills the roots of plants and makes it impossible for them to absorb the nutrients they need,” says Ann McCulloh, plant curator at Cleveland Botanical Garden. “The salt washes into streams and waterways and can affect aquatic life.”

Homeowners might be looking for green alternatives to harmful salt and chemical de icers, but the options aren’t perfect yet. There are less harmful de icers, but they also are more expensive.

At Home Depot, a 50 pound bag of Halite Salt Crystals is about $5.50. A 50 pound bag of Prestone Driving Heat calcium chloride pellets that are less harmful to vegetation and don’t leave white residue is $15.97 for a 50 pound bag.

For now, salt and chemical de icers are a necessary evil, at least for clearing ice on roads. Salt damage to plants has to be weighed against the loss of lives due to slick roads.

One option is to use a smaller amount of salt or de icer just to loosen ice, not completely melt it, and then remove the softened ice manually.

Brad Charles Melzer of the Ohio State University Extension says the “greenest” method to melt ice around your home likely is already in your garage.

“Shoveling is the best line of defense,” he says.

But we all know how fast a sheet of ice can form, and trying to prevent the buildup with a shovel can be useless.

Sand, light gravel, cinders and cat litter can provide some traction but won’t melt ice completely, he says. These can be used in conjunction with de icers if you’re looking to use fewer chemicals.

Safe Paw Ice Melter is touted as a no salt melter that’s safe for the environment and pet friendly. It’s available online and at Wal Mart, Petsmart and other stores.

Rob English, president of MeltSnow, a New England based company that makes de icing products including Magic Salt, says consumers are concerned about de icers.

“People want to know what are the best products to use on city streets, in parking garages, around day care centers where children crawl and pick up deicers on their hands, and around canine kennels where pets are exposed.”

De icers containing calcium chloride, though not entirely “green,” are definitely among the safest but, like the Prestone product, pricier. De icers containing potassium chloride also are among the most environmentally friendly but expensive. And neither are always easy to find.

Here are the main five types of de icers for home and commercial use, according to English. Some might only be available online.

Sodium chloride, or rock salt. This crystal de icer is the least expensive and most widely used. It’s harmful to vegetation.

Magnesium chloride, such as Ice Melt by Uline. It doesn’t leave a powdery residue, and it’s considered safer for humans, animals and vegetation. But it’s pricier than rock salt and can damage masonry.

Calcium chloride, such as Prestone Driving Heat. If used as directed, it won’t harm vegetation. But it’s expensive, and it can leave a harmful residue on carpets and shoes.

Potassium chloride, such as Diamond Crystal. People like it because it’s environmentally friendly, says English, but expensive.

Acetates, such as IceClear De Icer. They come as sodium acetate, calcium magnesium acetate and potassium acetate. These de icers are organic chemical compounds that break down naturally in the environment and leave little damage.

If you do use rock salt, at the very least stop applying it by later winter. According to OSU’s Melzer, late March is when plants are breaking dormancy, and the roots begin to actively absorb water and nutrients.

timberlands cheap ICICI Prudential’s tribute to men

In its latest TV commercial, the insurance brand strings together various caring acts by men for which they rarely get credit.

It is rare to find a woman who doesn’t have any complaints against her spouse. However, men do have a caring, tender side to them, which hardly ever comes to their partner’s attention. ICICI Prudential has taken notice of this, with its latest campaign celebrating the “family man”. The commercial stands apart from its earlier campaigns, which have essentially focused on ICICI Prudential’s product features.

Titled ‘Bande achhe hai’, a colloquial term used to refer to good men, the four week campaign has been created by Lowe Lintas and Partners. Inspired by real life incidents, the 30 , 60 and 90 second TVC shows everyday simple situations, where men in various stages of family life, perform small, caring acts that are taken for granted. Even the men do these without making a fuss.

For instance, an elderly husband adjusting his seat so that his wife is shaded from the sun or a young husband swapping places with the wife, while walking on the side of the road, in order to protect her from oncoming vehicles. In another situation, a father protects his little daughter, who has left a trail of muddy shoe prints in the principal’s office, by making it seem as if he’s responsible for the mess.

Manish Dubey, senior vice president and head marketing, ICICI Prudential, says that with the life insurance landscape in India undergoing a change in the last two three years, there has been a need to reinforce the brand and what it stands for in the mind of the consumer. “The brief for the campaign was simple celebrating the family man. The concept of protection is very important to the family man,
timberland roll top boots for men ICICI Prudential's tribute to men
shown through various small acts, but he hardly speaks about it. As a brand, we fully understand this and salute the family man’s endeavour by helping him in protecting his family,” he states.

The TVC sums it up, ‘Jo zimmedari nibhate hai, jataate nahi’ (‘Those who are responsible don’t exhibit it’). The campaign addresses all member of the Indian family in the 30 50 year age group.

Amer Jaleel, national creative director, Lowe Lintas and Partners, says, “These small acts are not chivalry; it’s a case of understanding your role and not making a big deal of it. Men will relate to the situation and women will look at men in a new light and love them for it,” he says. The creative team had come up with over a hundred such situations out of which a small number were chosen.

The lyrics are by Swanand Kirkere and music has been composed by Shantanu Moitra. The commercial has been directed by Amit Sharma of Chrome Pictures. “Unfortunately, only the taxi situation did justice to the insight expressed in the jingle. The rest were mere depictions of men shielding the women in their lives. I thought, it was an emotional opportunity missed; to depict both sides of the typical man,” he says. He adds that it also failed to give a sense of what’s next. Sharma also believes that ICICI Prudential has changed so many campaigns over the years that it has missed the opportunity to build a larger platform for itself. “Every campaign looks like a one off idea, and in the larger scheme of things amounts to very little in the consumer’s memory bank,” he argues.

Swati Bhattacharya, national creative director, JWT India, believes that although the ad was very sweet, it could have been done better. “It seemed crammed with too many situations. But from a viewer’s perspective, the creative definitely works,” she says. Bhattacharya adds that while it’s a feel good commercial for the male provider,
timberland roll top boots for men ICICI Prudential's tribute to men
she is not sure that the viewer will be provoked to be insured at the end of the ad.
