Judge John Corbett O Meara was killed in a two car crash in St. Clair Shores over the weekend, according to police and the man s colleagues.
Corbett Edge O Meara, 47, of Grosse Pointe Farms, died from injuries he sustained in the Saturday afternoon accident on Harper Avenue at Shady Lane, St. Clair Shores police said in a news release.
Corbett O Meara was an attorney associated with Schulman s firm for more than 12 years and maintained an office at the firm s Detroit suite in the Guardian Building. Saturday when he struck the rear of a silver 2001 Mercedes Benz. After striking the car, the Acura continued on and struck a tree on the northeast corner of Harper and Shady Lane.
Both drivers were transported to a hospital and O Meara later died. The driver of the Mercedes Benz,
a 69 year old woman who was heading to a bagel store, is reported to be in critical condition at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
There was indication that alcohol was involved, but police said the investigation is continuing.
We know how the crash happened, now we re trying to find out why, said police Lt. Steven Lambert, adding investigators were awaiting results of an autopsy to see if the driver had a medical condition that may have caused the accident.
Schulman described O Meara as a dynamic attorney who was able to handle some of the most difficult and high profile criminal cases in state and federal courts.
He went on to call O Meara a champion for justice and had a passion for social issues. He said O Meara will be remembered for his positive spirit, good humor and dedication to the legal profession.
